Miss Glenda Bailey and Miss Debbie Rathel's pre-K classes studied about fire safety last week, and they took a field trip to the fire department to learn more about the importance of what to do if a fire were to break out in their homes. Mr. Bobby Richardson Jr. was on hand to talk to the students and explain that everyone should have fire detectors in his/her homes and to have a plan if a fire were to break out. Mr. Bobby also talked about the importance of how to escape to safety. He told the students that you are not supposed to stand up and run, but to crawl low to the door. Smoke rises up, and the cleaner air is low, so you want to stay as low as you can and crawl to safety. First you raise your hand to feel if there is heat coming from the door, if so, do not open the door, stay low and find another way out through a window. If it is all possible, do not get alarmed, stay calm. The Miller County Fire Department will do everything it can to get you out unharmed. Also, Mr. Richardson told the students not to be afraid of the firemen. The gear that a fireman has to wear is for their safety. The fireman has to wear a shield over his head for protection, a fire proof suit, and a breathing apparatus; even though they might look scary, firemen are not. They are there to help get you out of a burning building or home.

He also spoke about the steps to putting out a fire if you were to catch on fire. Stop, drop and roll! Do not throw water on yourself or anyone else, just stop, drop to the ground and start rolling, rolling, and rolling. This will smother the fire.

Mr. Bobby had on-hand two firemen dressed in full gear, Mr. Tracy Odom and Mr. Keith Fitzgerald.

The grand finale of the trip was getting to see firsthand the inside of the fire truck and to listen to fire truck alarm. Each student received a fireman's hat and a bag of important goodies to take home and sit down with their parents and discuss a plan if their home were to catch on fire.

The Miller County pre-K teachers along with Miss Renee Haire, resource coordinator of MCES pre- K, pre-K assistants, Miss Debi Aiken, Miss Melva Perkins, and parent escort, Mrs. Lynn Cofty would like to thank Mr. Bobby Richardson Jr. and the Fire Department for allowing the visit.
