Bainbridge -At 12:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, Bainbridge Public Safety officers responded to Brierwood Apartments located at 1025 Palmetto St., Bainbridge, after 911 received reports of multiple gun shots being fired in the parking lot.

According to people interviewed in the area, two groups of males, totalling around 15, in the D building parking lot became involved in a verbal altercation that led to a fight breaking out.

One of the males pulled out a handgun firing several shots in the air, and several more shots followed.

Before police arrived, the men involved in the altercation fled the scene -- some in a car and some on foot.

One of the bullets went through the door of an apartment and was found embedded in a wall inside the apartment, said Investigator James Dollar. Another bullet was found in the window shutter of the apartment.

A woman, her boyfriend, and infant child at home in the apartment, were not injured.

One of the witnesses told investigators the fight was gang-related due to comments she overheard involving the Crips and Bloods.

Blakely - The Early County High Band of Blue was one of 13 Georgia high school bands invited to perform at halftime of the Georgia Tech-Duke football game Saturday in Atlanta.

Band Day provides high school bands the opportunity to visit the Georgia Tech campus and play alongside the Yellow Jacket marching band.

It was a long day for the 42 band members, staff and band boosters who made the trip to Atlanta. They left early Saturday morning and joined the other bands and Yellow Jacket marching band for rehearsal and a morning full of drum battles, horn challenges, and stand music before stepping out onto Bobby Dodd Field to perform in front of over 48,000 fans.

Cairo - The concession stand at Cairo High School's baseball field was burned to the ground this week, and a $10,000 reward is being offered for information about who was involved.

A Cairo police officer patrolling Monday evening discovered the fire, according to Keith Sandefeur, Cairo Police Chief. "The officer observed smoke, and he was able to follow the smoke and discover the fire," Sandefeur explains.

When Cairo firefighters arrived on the scene, four minutes after they received the call, the wood frame structure had already burned to the ground.

Cairo Fire Chief Don Towne says he suspected arson early in the case, "Monday night we had some indications that it was a 'set fire,' but we were not definite because we were unable to see clearly. We noted that the two rollup windows were locked and in the down position, and the security door was locked. That was a big clue. I guess the last function they had out there was four weeks prior to the fire."

Georgia certified fire investigators returned to the scene Tuesday morning and determined, officially, the fire was set intentionally. "It appeared that some sort of liquid was poured around the outside of the building and set on fire," Towne says.

The fire department is working on the case with the Georgia Fire Marshal's Office and Cairo Police Department.

Camilla - After weeks of rumor and innuendo, it has finally been announced that each of the schools in the Mitchell County School System made AYP. Superintendent Beauford Hicks was pleased to make the announcement, praising the efforts of each of the five schools in the system.

"That's a tremendous accomplishment simply because the district's performance upon our entry was quite a ways from that," Hicks said. "I had some administrators say to me, some years ago, that they did not feel that it was even possible in some cases in some schools.

Hicks felt that the district's success was based on programs and initiatives implemented during the past three years. He added that progress takes time, and it was understandable that "making the grade" could not happen overnight.

The Mitchell County School system is comprised of Baconton Community Charter School, Mitchell County High School, Walker-Inman Elementary School, and Mitchell County Primary School.
