The bad weather from Fay held off for our Mighty Pirates to play their scrimmage game here at Pirate Field against Webster County Eagles, and it was a great game played by our team.

Head Coach Frank Killingsworth, along with his coaching staff Coach Jason Houston, Coach Richard Griffin, Coach Nate George, and Coach Scott Warren, had the Pirates ready as they took to the field.

In the first half of the game, Miller County did not waste anytime putting points on the board with Jamichael Shepard. The extra point attempt came up short, but the score stood 6-0. The Eagles did everything they could to move the ball down field, but the Pirates' defense kept the door shut, causing Webster to kick away the pigskin. Cosby Salters received the ball and broke out into a gallop down to the one yard line before being brought down by an Eagle claw. First and goal, Miller County's quarterback-Trez Morgan kept the little piggie home and stepped into the end zone. Again the point attempt came up short, and the score was 12-0.

On the Eagles' next possession, some of the Black Death defenders, consisting of Mc- Quel Sims, Tony Grier, Robert Baker, and Terry Williams, put pressure on the Eagles' offense, causing a turnover on downs.

First and 10 from the Pirates' own 49 yard line, QB Morgan again kept the pig home and broke out like a thoroughbred on a race track down to the end zone for a touchdown. This time, the Pirates attempted a two-point conversion which came up short, but they held an 18-0 lead.

Again the Eagles made every attempt to work the pigskin down field, but the Black Death laid over the Eagles like a dark cloud. Baker, Sims, and Salters were like thieves in the night stopping the Eagles. Again the Eagles punted away with Cosby Salters receiving and zig-zagging all over the field down to the end zone for a touchdown. But it seemed that the Pirates could not get a leg up on the field goal kicks or two point conversions. The score was 24-0.

The second half was pretty much like the first half except the B-team got in on the action in the fourth quarter. The third quarter was nothing but Pirates' offense and defense. The Black Death pounded on the Eagles. Jeffrey King, Zenario Shuler, Colby Gilbert, Sims and Salters put pressure on the Eagle quarterback, causing the Eagles to kick away the pigskin. Jamichael Shepard received the ball and picked up a first down. First and ten, again Shepard took ball in hand and scored a touchdown, and the two - point conversion came up short, making it 30-0.

The B-team came in on the fourth quarter with Caleb Cunningham as the Pirate quarterback. Cunningham showed what he can do with the long arm of a Pirate. Caleb placed a pass right in the arms of Colby Gilbert to score a touchdown. It was a bodacious pass! Again the Pirates' two - point conversion was short. The score went to 36-0.

On the Eagles' next couple of possessions, Richaurd Sheffield, Alex Cobb, Trevonti Barber, Cory Hart, Russell Hart, Ty Sheffield, Nick Rawlings, Ricardo Williams, and Cody Philyaw got in on the action. Just under a couple of minutes of the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored a touchdown, but as the Eagles attempted a field goal, Nick Rawlings blocked the pigskin. The final score was 36-6.

Congratulations go to the team and coaches for a game well played. The Pirates will open their regular season on Saturday, August 30, in Albany. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. at Hugh Mills Stadium. The Pirates are looking forward to a great year of football, and they want all The Miller County Pirate fans to give them the support that they have worked so hard to earn.
