It was a good deed

'I just slid in the ditch.'
On July 9, there was a sudden rainstorm in the Bellview area. Normally this time of the year, a good rain anywhere is always welcomed, as was this one, except for one girl going down Old Airport Road.

The rain came so fast and hard that it soaked the dirt road and made it almost impassable.

This woman, unknown to the writer, had just turned off of the Bellview Highway onto the dirt road. She didn't make it 50 feet before she was in the ditch, a deep one, with her car.

Officer Dale Mitchell with the Miller County Sheriff's Department was on the scene and looking at the situation. The officer asked the driver if she wanted him to call a wrecker. The driver asked what the wrecker would cost, and when he told her, she stated that she didn't have that much.

The officer got down in the ditch, looked around. He came out and stated, "I think I can pull you out."

Someone looking on stated, "You must be kidding. You can't even stand up on this road it's so slick. You don't think that truck will pull her out?"

"That's a four-wheel drive. It will pull her out," the deputy stated.

It turned out to be a good deed for the deputy. He pulled the car out with no damage. She backed her car onto the paved road, took off another way toward home. I'm not sure she even thanked the deputy, but she should have since he saved her between $125 to $200.

I'm sure she has a kinder feeling toward law enforcement officers now. This was a great example of a public servant at work.
