Bainbridge - A woman was arrested in connection with the arson and burglary of a home at 515 Bethany Church Road thanks to a tip from a local citizen.

John Bush, the owner of the home, installed a security system in response to a series of robberies that occurred at the home in the last year. After the fire, he provided the tape to Decatur County Sheriff's investigators.

The tape showed Shawn Keith Smith pull a vehicle to the back of the house, enter through the back door and begin removing items from the home. It also showed a woman in the car who points out the security cameras to Smith.

Thanks to the video evidence, Smith and his accomplice, 34-year-old Tanya Christine Alphord of 222 Green Shade Road in Bainbridge were arrested.

Smith was arrested on July 1 for robbery, arson, theft by receiving stolen property, and possession of marijuana.

On July 7, following a tip from a citizen who saw the video, Alphord was arrested and charged with burglary and arson.

Blountstown - A Blounstown man is facing the rest of his life behind bars after being convicted of child molestation.

It took a jury just two hours to return a guilty verdict Friday in the case against Sam Alford, 41. He was charged with five counts of sexual battery on a child less than 12 years of age and two counts of lewd or lascivious molestation.

According to State Attorney Steve Meadows, Alford is accused of molestating two sisters over a 10-year span. Five of the sexual battery counts and one of the lewd or lascivious counts were allegedly committed when the girls were less than 12 years of age.

Sentencing is set for July 30. The sexual battery counts carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Alford has no prior felony record.

Cairo - A man driving wildly with an unsecured baby in a pickup truck led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase Monday straight to his residence in Cairo where it took pepper spray and a taser to get the suspect in custody.

Grady County Sheriff Harry Young says the acts of two important people probably prevented the man, Higinio Lucas Garcia, from killing anyone with the pickup he was driving.

A Havanna, FL man alerted E-911 about a dangerous driver. Deputies caught up with Garcia several miles outside of Cairo, but he refused to stop. Young says officers clocked Garcia traveling 91 miles per hour at one point.

As the chase came into the city limits, Garcia ran several red lights, plowed into the rear of a deputy car before he continued to his residence.

Officers pulled Garcia from the truck, but he resisted, so officers used pepper spray to bring him to submission. When Garcia continued to struggle with officers, they used a taser to stun the suspect at least two times before he could get him in handcuffs, Young says.

Garcia, 22, was incarcerated at Grady Detention Center where he remained Tuesday. He faces numerous traffic charges and several felonies, including aggravated assault on an officer, felony fleeing, interference with government property, DUI, endangerment of a child under 14, failure to drive within a single lane, driving without a license, and open container.

Dawson - Terrell County Authorities are investigating a burglary at Sasser City Hall on Sunday night, Terrell Sheriff John Bowens reported Tuesday of last week.

According to Sheriff Bowens, the front door to City Hall was apparently pried in, and entry into the building was gained there.

Sheriff Bowens said that once entry was made, they went into an office inside the building and rambled through the desk drawers in that office.

Anyone who might have seen an unusual vehicle in or near the area is asked to contact the sheriff's department, Sheriff Bowens asked.
