Colquitt United Methodist help host Mission team
      A church bus load of 15 missionaries and two drivers from Colquitt headed for the Atlanta Airport on Friday, July 11. This local group joined with 34 more members of the mission team.

Class of '53 holds reunion
      The Miller County High School Class of 1953 held its 55th class reunion at the American Legion Post in Colquitt on June 28. Saturday morning members and their spouses or guests attended a coffee at 10 a.m. At 5:00 everyone gathered for a class picture and a delicious buffet dinner, which was enjoyed by all.

First Franklin holds coloring contest
      To kick off summer vacation for kids in our area, First Franklin Financial held a coloring contest to welcome the season. A lots of kids entered the contest, and some really good entries were turned in. However, everyone could not be a winner. So the top two artists were chosen by the judges.

New law for DUI offenders
      ATLANTA - Effective July 1, the Multiple Offender Program of the Addictive Disease Section of the Department of Human Resources has been renamed the DUI Intervention Program. This change reflects HB 336 recently signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue.

The history of aprons
      I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

It was a good deed
      On July 9, there was a sudden rainstorm in the Bellview area. Normally this time of the year, a good rain anywhere is always welcomed, as was this one, except for one girl going down Old Airport Road. The rain came so fast and hard that it soaked the dirt road and made it almost impassable.

Larry King was on his way home when he saw someone out of their vehicle, and about the time he got there, he saw this very large snake. The man pulled out his gun and emptied it toward the snake.

      A summer storm caused roads to cover in water, ditches to fill, and trees to be blown down in several areas of the county Saturday, July 12. One wreck was caused by the quick rainstorm, and there were many reports of trees in or near the roadways.
