Man dead, cause unknown
The Miller County EMS was called to respond to a call at 209 Dancer Street, Saturday at 8:04 a.m. The officers found an unresponsive male and transported him to the Miller County Hospital emergency room where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m.
Coroner Danny Sheffield was called to the ER. Hospital officials were unable to locate a valid ID or Green card but finally got in contact with a witness who called the family of the deceased in Mexico to get his full name and age.
The victim was identified as Jose Antonio Herandez Garcia, a 29-year-old Mexican male.
According to the coroner, the body of the deceased will be sent to the crime lab in Macon on Tuesday, May 27, for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The reason for the delay in sending the body is due to the crime lab being closed for the long Memorial Day holiday.
Witnesses said the deceased had been drinking heavily for a number of weeks, and was not eating. The preliminary cause of death is thought to be alcohol poisoning.
When the case is completed, the body will be flown to Mexico for burial.
The Colquitt Police is in charge of the investigation, but no report could be obtained due to the Memorial Day holiday, and City Hall and the Colquitt Police Department were closed.
