40% of Georgia's 8th graders may fail math portion of CRCT

Worse news for 6th & 7th graders
by MCL staff writer

In a news release from State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox some preliminary results on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT): 40% of the state's 8th-graders did not pass the math portion of the test. Officialresults are not in yet.

For sixth and seventh graders, the news is worse -- the pass rate on the social studies portion of the CRCT shows that only 20-30% of students passed.

"While, again, we do not have statewide or system results, we are fairly certain that a substantial majority of our sixth- and seventh-grade students did not meet the standards on the Social Studies exam," said Cox.

New standards and a new curriculum are partly to blame, says Cox, and she's asked a group of education specialists to figure out what has caused such poor performance.
