Elizabeth Roland inducted Elizabeth Roland inducted The Miller County Sports Banquet was a huge success for a lot of athletes. Senior Danielle Collier opened the ceremony welcoming everyone, and senior Matthew Tully gave the invocation. The delicious meal prepared by the Miller County High School Lunchroom staff consisted of mouth-watering fried chicken, whipped potatoes, string beans, rolls, strawberry cake and ice cold tea.

Shortly after the meal, MCHS Principal, Mrs. Ginger Webster gave opening remarks and introduced Miller County Athletic Booster Club President, Mr. Vince Widner. Mr. Widner then proceeded to induct a former Lady Pirate by honoring the family of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Shingler Roland to the Miller County Hall of Fame. Miss Elizabeth was born and raised in Miller County to the parents of Frank and Jenny Shingler. She was a country girl raised on the farm. Miss Elizabeth attended Enterprise school first through sixth grade. Then, after the consolidation of all Miller County Schools, Miss Elizabeth attended Miller County Schools during her seventh through 12th grade.

In her younger years, her daddy built a basketball goal out behind the chicken house where she began playing the game. In 1958, her freshman year, Elizabeth joined the Miller County High School basketball team. She played all four years of high school. She was a great player but was very modest about her talents. She was a hustler and gave her all on every play. She was a true team player. She was a "work horse" on the court, not a show horse.

Miss Elizabeth played on two state runner-up teams in AA ball and was on the State Champion team in Class A in 1960, along with three more seniors. She was chosen MVP of the state championship team. Elizabeth was also chosen to the All-State teams in 1960 and 1961, her junior and senior years.

In Miss Elizabeth's era, girls did not have the good fortune of continuing their career in college sports. Elizabeth stayed in Miller County and became the wife of her high school sweetheart, Mr. Jerry Roland. She was the mother of three children, Anna, Lance and Cleve Roland, all of whom graduated from Miller County High School.

After raising her children, Elizabeth attended nursing school and began her career in the health care field. She chose to devote her time to the care of the elderly. She was a licensed RN and nursing home administrator. She was director of Nursing at Memorial Manor Nursing Home, and in 1987 she became the owner-operator of Great Gran's Personal Care Home, an assisted living facility in Donalsonville. If Elizabeth could be remembered for one thing, it would be for her services to others. Elizabeth loved the game of basketball, and she was a true caregiver. Mr. Widner then asked Mr. Jerry Roland and family to come forward and accept the Hall of Fame plaque in memory of Miss Elizabeth Shingler Roland. Mr. Jerry thanked the Booster Club and spoke of his loving wife and the love she had of basketball. It was an honor to have a couple of her team mates on hand, Miss Glenda Wells and Miss Shelby Williams. Each young lady spoke highly of Miss Elizabeth and her ability to play basketball. The sparkles in each of these ladies' eyes were shining brightly as they reminisced about the good ole days, the love of the game, and what a huge impact Miss Elizabeth had on their lives. The four girls that were on the 1960 State Champion Basketball team were Miss Elizabeth Shingler, Miss Glenda Wells, Miss Shelby Williams, and Miss Sarah Jane Hornsby.
