Lady Pirates Advance to State

By: Glenda Bailey

The Lady Pirates can't be stopped! The Lady Pirates can't be stopped! The first round of Region 1-A playoffs was held over in Donalsonville on February 12. Our own Miller County Lady Pirates were there to face the Atkinson County Lady Rebels. Miller County carried the win with class as they dominated the Lady Rebels, 62-25. Unfortunately, Senior Telisha Calloway a her ankle in the fourth quarter but that only made the Lady Pirates that much more determined to win. Freshman Selena Diamond was the top scorer with a total of 18 points for the Lady Pirates. Shay Crankfield followed with 14 points; Christy Daniels added 10 points, and Toya Bush assisted with 8 points.

The second round of Region 1-A was played in Dawson, Georgia. Our Lady Pirates faced the Pelham Lady Hornets and just did ease by the Lady Hornets by 4 points. Shay Crankfield played one of her best games in her high school career scoring 30 points. There was no stopping this young athlete. Selena Diamond added 9 points while her older sister Sukena Diamond hit 8 points. Katrina Crankfield stepped up and played her heart out as point guard. The final score was Lady Pirates 55 to Lady Hornets' 51.

Then on Friday, February 158, our Lady Pirates traveled back to Dawson to play the semi-final game against the GHSA Class A No. 1 state ranked Lady Greenwaves. It was a heart-breaker for our Lady Pirates, but our girls took the loss with Pirate Pride. The game was hard played with Miller's starting point guard Telisha Calloway. In the first 6:23 minutes of the first quarter, Miller County was scoreless and trailed 13-2 after the first quarter. But the Lady Pirates were able to slow down Terrell County's Monshay Thomas, the reigning Region 1-A girls' player of the year. Miller County stayed close on Thomas. Shay Crankfield and Sukena Diamond stripped back-toback three pointers to close in on The Greenwaves in the second quarter.

Coach Robert Melton stated, "They hit lay-up after lay-up on us. If it had not been for that run, we would have been in the game at the end." Miller County's Shay Crankfield led the Lady Pirates with 14 points, along with her younger sister Katrina Crankfield adding 8. Terrell's Monshay Thomas was held to only 14 points by the Lady Pirates. The final score was 46-32 which was one of the lowest scoring for Terrell County Lady Greenwaves this season.

Finally, on Saturday, February 16, our Lady Pirates traveled back to Dawson to face Bacon County and to findout how they would be seeded in the state tournament. The final score for this game was Miller County 46 to Bacon County's 39. Shay Crankfield hit 17 points while Christy Daniels added 11 points. Katrina Crankfield and Salena Diamond each tacked on 6 points. So as the story goes, our Miller County Lady Pirates finished third in overall in regular season and third in Region 1-A and will advance to the first round of state this Saturday over in Savannah, Georgia, which the games will be played at Cavalry Baptist Coliseum. The Pirate fans and the Lady Pirates, along with Coach Robert and Coach Marianne, hope to have Telisha Calloway back in full force as they get ready to set sail on the Pirate Ship headed for Savannah.

For those of you who do not know this, Coach Robert Melton and his Lady Pirates have advanced to the state play-offs seven out of eight seasons since he has been head basketball coach here at Miller County High School. A big "thank you" goes out to Coach Robert and to his assistant Coach Marianne Melton for all you do. Your dedication to the basketball program here at MCHS is greatly appreciated.
