Relay for Life kick-off held

The Miller County Kick- Off Rally for Miller County's sixth annual Relay for Life was held Tuesday evening, January 29, 2008, at the Colquitt United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Jay Funderburke, Relay co-chairman, welcomed everyone, and Jill Brown, co-chair, opened the meeting with prayer.

A delicious meal was served to the volunteers, team captains and others interested in helping with Relay for Life.

Jill and Jay presented All Star Awards for the 2007 Relay for Life to the 10 teams.

Colquitt Free Will Baptist Church was the team collecting the most money with a total of $7,508.00. Bellview Free Will Baptist Church was the second highest money raiser with an amount of $6,582.00.

Margaret Ann Daniels, president of Miller County Unit of the American Cancer Society, recognized the officers and thanked each of them for their hard work and dedication.

Mrs. Daniels and Beth Zotyka, community income manager, presented awards to the following: Award of Excellence, Dot Wainright; Income Development Award, PeopleSouth and Martiele Pickle; Outstanding Media Award, Miller County Liberal; Youth Award, Kayla Burke; Volunteer of the Year, Jill Brown and Jay Funderburke.

Cassie Brooks was recognized, and she announced plans for the first Relay for Life Pageant which will be held February 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the Miller County Elementary School Auditorium. If you would like to know more about the pageant, you may contact Cassie at 229-758-2273.

Jill announced the 2008 Relay for Life theme, "Be a Cancer Free State in 2008." Nine teams have already signed up for this year's relay. Go ahead and get your team and pick your state to help fight cancer. You may call Jill at 758-4241 if you have any questions.

This year's Relay for Life will be held Friday, April 11, beginning at 6:00 p.m. and ending on Saturday, April 12, at 1:00 a.m. The event will be held at Spring Creek Park.

Tammy Richardson, treasurer, reports that the money given for luminaries can be counted for "Relay for Life" team total.

The next team captains' meeting will be held Tuesday, February 12, at the Chamber of Commerce.

Anyone that is interested in helping with this event is welcome to come and join us. Let's plan to make this one of the best Relay for Life events yet.

The meeting closed with door prizes given away.
