MCMS Sixth grade competes in St. Jude's Math-A-Thon

Math-A-Thon participants Math-A-Thon participants The Sixth Grade Class of Miller County Middle School recently participated in the St. Jude's Math-A-Thon. The drive began on November 16th and ended on December 14. The students actually worked the math problems in class on December 17 and 18.

St. Jude's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for is pioneering work in fining cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization, through events such as Math-A-Thon.

At the beginning of the fundraising event, the grade set $500 as its goal. As the students became involved and learned more about the hospital, they raised their goal daily. On Monday, December 17, 2007, Principal Frank Killingsworth announced the grand total of contributions -- $3201.00! "We are so proud of our students and the compassion that they feel toward children who are stricken with cancer and other diseases," commented the principal.

The participating students were rewarded on Tuesday with a pizza party. The party was made possible by Daryl's Place and the Miller County Collaborative. Special thanks also go to Mrs. Amanda Long, Mr. Cleve Roland, Mrs. Harriet Lane, Mr. Frank Killingsworth, and Mrs. Dottie Varnadoe. Appreciation also goes to the sixth grade teachers -- Mrs. Rosa Phillips, Mrs. Leslie Godwin, Mrs. Marilyn Brackin, and Mrs. Nancy Davis -- for their encouragement and support. The class would also like to express sincere thanks to the hundreds of contributors in our community that donated money to St. Jude's.
