Everybody reads at Miller County Elementary

Left to right: Jacob Porter, Principal Beth Mithen and Jacquira Hopson
To promote reading at the elementary school, a reading campaign was kicked off in August by the the teachers and students. Led by Dawn Shepard, Reading First Literacy Coach and Debra Calhoun, Academic Coach, the student body was encouraged to read 10,000 books each nine weeks. This included books read at home and at school. The students kept reading journals and turned them into their teachers when completed.

When the students met their goal for the first semester, Beth Mithen, principal, painted her hair purple with glitter highlights to show her support for the students' reading success.

The students will help choose the next reward when they reach their next semester goal.

MCES staff hopes this will encourage their students to read daily. At the end of the year, Miss Dawn and Miss Debra plan to reach their goal of 40,000 books read by the elementary students. When we do reach this goal, there will be a huge celebration.
