Up The Creek Without A Paddle
It's been an intersting year -
by Terry Toole
This is the last edition for the year 2007. To say the least, it's been and interesting year for "ye scribe" and the folks who get your Miller County Liberal out each week. For me, it has been a labor of love. Like my 93 year old mother-in law, Uva, who helps me several days each week, the pa...

Bob from church
submitted by cangrow
Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 Mph zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often? When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe som...

Free speech allows us to be as stupid as we choose
by Dink NeSmith
The First Amendment is so broad that it covers both ends of the extremes and everything in between. For it to work, it must. That means most of us in the moderate middle are safely covered as the ultra left- and right-wingers spit poison darts back and forth.

Backroads and Bobtails
No Trophy, But Little Disappointment
by Bob Kornegay
I pulled off the woods road and parked my truck in a rutted turnout worn bare of vegetation by long years of tire abuse. It was just the other side of 5:30 a.m. Too early, probably, but this morning's deer stand was some distance away, a longer walk than usual. Better too early than too late.

A Candidate For All America
by Alex McRae
For more than a year, Americans who actually plan on voting in the 2008 presidential elections have subjected themselves to a form of torture worse than watching the Atlanta Falcons play football: watching political debates. This allegedly helps voters learn where the candidates stand on issues s...

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can l...

Ebony Dots & Dashes
by Katie Smith
There is a time when all you can say or do seems to small. This is such a time for me. I have lived a long time, most of it in Miller County. I've made some real good friends here that I cherish, black and white. I've had some good days, I've had some bad days. But through it all, I made it.

"They are different but they are so pretty"
by Ren Summerlin
Oh My, Christmas. To many a time of great joy and to some a time of woe. Being bad was always mentioned at this time of year, however one had to keep one's spirits up. When I was but a lad, Christmas time was a wonderful, great and splendid time. Music, little homework from the teachers, exciteme...

Jose and Carlos are panhandlers. They panhandle in different areas of town. Carlos panhandles just as long as Jose does but only collects 2 to 3 dollars every day. Jose brings home a suitcase FULL of $10 bills, drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage-free house and has a lot of money to spend.

I don't carry a gun
submitted by Lindy
I don't carry a gun…… to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed. I don't carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place. I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.
