Lady Pirates tame the Cougars
by Glenda Bailey

It has been a long time since the Lady Pirates have beaten the Lady Cougars of Edison, but it happened right here at the Pirates' Gymnasium last Tuesday night. In the first three quarters, the Lady Cougars held the lead, but it was in the fourth quarter that senior-Shay Crankfield stepped up and scored 14 points. At the end of the fourth, the Miller and Calhoun girls were tied 55-55. Everyone was on his or her feet cheering for our Lady Pirates. Coach Mike Williams' Lady Cougars are tough and hard to beat; that has been proved over the years by Coach Williams' hard work and dedication to the program over in Edison.

In overtime four minutes was put up on the clock and one time out for each coach as the game proceeded. Again Shay Crankfield showed out for the home crowd as she added nine points, but it was Crankfield'syounger sister Katrina Crankfield that scored the two points to move the Lady Pirates out in front and hold the lead for the win 66-64 in overtime.

In the second game, Calhoun County boys moved out in front of our Pirates with the score of 65-54. Jimmy Glover of Calhoun County was the top scorer with a total of 25 points, followed by Dailey Strafford hitting 16 points. Top scorer for Miller County was Zenario Shuler hitting 20 points, and out of those points Shuler hit six three-points. Mistakes were costly for our Pirates.

Our Pirates will be playing in a couple of tournaments over the Christmas break. The first tourney will December 20, 21, and 22 over in Lowndes County. Then after Christmas, our boys will travel to Turner County on December 28 and 29 to play in a tournament. Good luck and safe traveling to our boys as they travel to play in these tourneys.

On Friday, December 14, our Lady Pirates hosted the Webster County Lady Eagles of Preston. Our Lady Pirates dominated the Lady Eagles, 75-38. Toya Bush and Christy Daniels scored 16 points each, followed by Salina Diamond scoring 12 points, Telisha Calloway scored 11 points, Shay Crankfield added 8 points, Janay Ancheta assisted with 6 points, Sukena Diamond tacked on 4 points, and Shanalia Kelley added on 2 points. Calloway came on strong in the second quarter as well as Crankfield and Salina Diamond. Christy Daniels stepped up in the third quarter, and Toya Bush kept it up in the fourth quarter. Top scorer for Webster County was Ashley Hardwick with 11 points.

As the Miller County Liberal is being put into the paper machines, our Lady Pirates and Pirates will be getting ready to host the Bainbridge Lady Cats and Cats. The teams as well as the coaches hope to see the Pirates' Gymnasium filled to capacity to show their support. Game time is at 6:00 P.M.
