Up The Creek Without A Paddle
When Grandma started this newspaper, the type was set one letter at a time. Some of it was wood type and some lead. It kind of makes me ashamed at the difference in setting up a newspaper then and now. She had a lot more stamina back then to do what she did, being a teacher in several schools in the county, with a family to take care of, and her mode of travel was a bike. I never have understood why she wanted to start a newspaper. She was some kind of a woman. Everyone who ever helped her in this newspaper is dead, my father, Joseph; my uncle, Bert; not to forget Ma, Annie Lou; and my aunt, Willie. I really miss them all. Sure wish they were here to help me at times like these. As we go into our 110th year of operation without missing the first issue, we will continue to give you as much local news as we can gather. We will continue to, with the good help I have, and the help of God, to get you this newspaper each week by new stands, postal service and web site. Other than some of the jokes we use when we can, I think Grandma would have been proud of the progress of the Liberal. She didn't have too much of a sense of humor. I guess I wouldn't either if I had it like she did when this all got started. We've had some great things happening in our community in the past year. People very definitely know about Colquitt and what we are trying to do. The Lord has been good to us, and in most cases, we continue to prosper as we try to improve what He has entrusted to us. Like any other community, we also have our warts. None of us are perfect, and we all fall short of our potential. A few continue to try and give us a bad name with deeds and actions. It's nothing new that some people are bad with their tongues, their actions, and their deeds. In 90-95 percent of the time, this is caused by poor choices, illegal drugs and alcohol. The other 5-10 percent is caused by greed and meanness. All bad is caused by our choice not to obey what we have been commanded to do for ourselves and others. As hard as it seems, we must do all that we can not to allow others to continue to be hurt because of the lies and actions against citizens by a few drug addicts and alcoholics. They are causing death, destruction and havoc, and must be stopped. Thank goodness, the bad is far outnumbered by good, honest, enterprising people who want, and demand an aggressive, growing community. Most want this place to be the best to live and rear our children. Only good people can make changes that will help us live in a place that we can all be proud to call home. If something is right, it seems that we must constantly fight to keep it right. If things are wrong, we must keep up our vigil to continue to show that we want better for our people. Over the past 110 years, we at the Miller County Liberal have attempted to help fight our local, state and national battles for right. As this editor enters his twilight years, you can bet that we will continue to bring you as much of the news as we can gather and help to make Colquitt and Miller County an even better place to live with our family, friends and neighbors. My Christmas wish is that from the very youngest to the very oldest be shown love and caring, that the sick be healed, that families who are broken be brought back together. May the reason for the coming of the Christ Child come to pass in your lives, and the unsaved be saved since that is the reason He was born, died and arose to live forever. The Good News is that He wants everyone of us with Him. This is the season of the year when many of us realize that we really will leave this life with just what we arrived. It's that time in between, and how we use it, that will make all the difference for eternity. May this Christmas bring each of you love, peace and the blessing of the Christ Child. There can be no greater gift. Merry Christmas and the blessings of God be with you one and all! |
