'Shadow' awarded praise plaque
by MCL staffwriter

Emanuel "Shadow" Haire receives plaque
You might remember a couple of weeks ago about an article that we printed in our paper entitled "Joy to the World."

The article told about a group from Niceville, Florida, that had come to see the Christmas play. After the play, due to headlight failure on the tour bus, they were traveling on, the group was stranded in Colquitt until about midnight. And you know as well as I, the town shuts down after awhile.

But,therewas one young man who the visitors were most thankful for, Emanuel "Shadow" Haire. "Shadow" volunteered his time in helping the driver test for electrical failure and also kept the firestation open for bathroom purposes until another bus arrived.

Shadow's nice gestures paid off this past week when the following letter was received by the mayor of Colquitt. Letters like this make you proud to know that we have young people like Shadow who are willing to devote their time to help visitors in a time of need.

December 2, 2007 Mayor of Colquitt, Georgia

Dear Mayor,

This letter is to express the gratitude of the "50 Plus Travelers" of the First United Methodist Church, Niceville, Florida to volunteer Fireman, Emanuel "Shadow" Haire. Our group was stranded for over three hours after the 7:30 Cotton Hall Christmas performance on Friday, November 30.

After the performance, it was discovered our tour bus had no headlights, and we could not travel on to Dothan to spend the night. Stafford, our driver, tried to do everything he could, and Emanuel was right there beside him. For over three hours Stafford and Emanuel communicated with the bus company in Mobile trying to fix the problem. Emanuel went and got a circuit tester and tested for electrical failure and allowed the 21 senior adult passengers to utilize the firedepartment's facilities. Without his assistance, this delay would have been very uncomfortable because many of our travelers have difficultywalking and having a restroom nearby was a blessing.

Emanuel stayed with us until we pulled out of town aboard another company's bus. Emanuel's unselfish actions to assist us were appreciated.

We hope you will pass on to Emauel our words of gratitude. Emanuel's kindness highly reflectson your town and community. Colquitt, Georgia,, cares about people, and we thank you.

Sincerely,

Marti Patterson

Adult & Family Minister

Editor's note: Shadow was awarded a plaque for his kind assistance at the annual firemen's banquet that was held last Tuesday night. Mayor Jerry Chapman read the letter that he had received from the church to the crowd. Shadow was given a huge round of applause for his good deed.
