MCES celebrates being drug-free
School students learned about the importance of being drug-free during the months of October and November. All students in grades PK-5 were taught the Too Good for Drugs Program through their guidance counselor, April Tabb. As an end to the drug-free program, numerous activities were scheduled for all students to help celebrate being healthy and drug-free. State Patrolman Jeremy Roberts spoke with the fourth and fifth grade students about making positive, personal choices so as to avoid peer pressure in relation to drugs. Deputy Glover, with the Miller County Sheriff's Department, along with his K-9 companion, carried out a program for the second and third grade students. OfficerDavid Cummings and OfficerHarris, with Florida State University, and McGruff talked with kindergarten and first grade students about stranger danger. Kindergarten and first grade students were also given the opportunity to practice what to do in the case of a bad stranger approaching them or trying to take them. All of the students at the elementary school attended an assembly with the Wheels of Freestyle BMX Stunt Bike Team. The team demonstrated the importance of staying fitand healthy with the extreme, airborne bike stunts that they performed for the students. Along with the stunts, came a lesson about leading drug-free lives so as to keep the brain, heart, and lungs healthy. The students also showed their drug-free spirit during Red Ribbon Week activities by dressing up for activities each day of the week, by singing drug-free songs during October's PTO night, and by participating in the Drug- Free Olympic Hours during the month of November. This year's Drug-Free and Safety Program could not have been made possible without the volunteers and/or donations from the Miller County Sheriff's Department, Colquitt Police Department, State Patrol Office,Commissioner's Office, and The Posie Patch. Thanks go out to everyone who was involved in helping to bring the activities together to help educate the children of Miller County. These children are our future, and with drug-free programs in place at early ages, our children will be better prepared in making good choices in their futures.
Wheels of Freestyle BMX Stunt Bike Team go to great heights to teach our youth.
