Festival of Southern Culture was great

Talent, tractors, BBQ, collards and more... Those were the central themes of the Festival of Southern Culture held this past weekend in downtown Colquitt. Thousands of locals and visitors alike crowded the downtown streets of Colquitt to celebrate the heritages of Southern Culture on Friday, November 9, and Saturday, November 10.
The festivities began on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. with an outstanding collage of southern cuisine with the "Taste of the South." Folks were able to sample everything from Swamp Gravy, to turnips and chicken and rice, and catfish nuggets,mayhaw jelly and biscuits, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. At 6:00 p.m. the "Talent Search" preliminaries began and was filled with 20 entrants performing everything from rap, rock, country and gospel music.
On Saturday the events kicked off at 9:30 a.m. with a parade of antique cars that were placed on display the entire day. At 10:00 a.m. the Miller County Elementary Chorus performed several patriotic selections and were accompanied by the American Legion Post providing the presentation of colors. The "Talent Search" finals were held at 11:00 with the five finalists performing for the top honors. The winners of the Talent Search were as follows:

First place went to Casey Gale of Jakin who won $1000.00. Second place was Tess McFay who received $750.00, and third place was Tanner Gleaton who receieved $500.00.
The crowd enjoyed entertainment during the day from the Leigh Mullis Band, Eastwind Bluegrass, and Ricky Atkinson and Compassion.
Billy and Donna Dekle and family of Donalsonville graciously shared their large collection of memorabillia as part of the festivities at Saturday's "Days Gone By" Exposition. Old timers especially enjoyed remembering old times. Some of the items displayed and demonstrated were the dairy exhibit, butter making demonstration, washing machine exhibit, washpot, scrub boards, antique lawn mower exhibit, and a working pioneer kitchen and many other items.

Marlin Gibson's tractor collection was enjoyed by so many. Marlin's John Deere collection dates back to the years 1938-1954.
Visitors also enjoyed a demonstration of peanuts being picked on a 1940 picker. Laverne McLendon and daughter, Judy Powell, demonstrated "soap making." Laverne also makes creams and hand cleaners.
Rodney Bryan's display of "old fashioned peanut stacks was a highlight of the show! Also farm animals were on hand for the young and young at heart to enjoy.
The Country Fair was held on Friday at Cotton Hall. The winners in this were: cakes, first place, Dot Wainwright; second place, Belle Wells; third place, Ashley Nelson. In the pickled products, first place, Charlie Boyd; second and third place, Laverne McLendon. In the jams and jellies, first, second and third place went to Laverne McLendon. In the peanut brittle category, first place was Jane Glass, second place Linda Widner and third place, Belle Wells.
In the quilt show, best of show went to Jane Glass. In the applique division, first place was Thelma Lovering and second place Laverne McLendon. In the antique division, first place was Jane Glass. In the craftsmanship division, first place was Jane Glass, second place Emmer Smith and third place, Betty Adams. In the exceptional design, first place, Jane Glass; second place, Thelma Lovering and third place, Doris Moody.
One of the largest hits of the festival was the Spring Creek Smoke-Off and the Collard Green Cook-off. Twelve BBQ teams competed for prizes with the following winners:
In the chicken category, first place went to the Barbecue Crew from Moultrie; second place was Great Southern Cookers from Arlington; and third place was Phoebe Worth RIB Ticklers from Sylvester.
In the ribs category, first place went to Raccoon Creek Rednecks from Colquitt; second place went to Phoebe Worth RIB Ticklers from Sylvester; and third place went to the Barbecue Club from Dothan, AL.
In the butts contest, first place went to Forrests' Fine Foods from Cottondale, FL; second place went to the Barbecue Club from Dothan, AL; and third place went to the Barbecue Crew from Moultrie.
In addition the winner of the Collard Green Cook-off was Iva Tabb.
All of the BBQ and the collards were sold to very hungry patrons. The Smoke Off and Collard Green Cook-off promises to be even larger next year.
When the festival came to a close there had been something offered for everyone. There are a host of people that are to be commended for the work on this festival. A great big "THANK YOU" goes out to everyone who had anything to do with the preparation, planning and operation of the Festival of Southern Culture. Next year promises to be even bigger and better.
