Dawson - A Terrell Superior Court Judge has sentenced a Dawson man in connection with the death of a Dawson toddler after he pleaded guilty during the course of his trial in Superior Court last week. Terrell Superior Court Judge Ronnie Joe Lane sentenced Gary Wayne Trotter, Jr., 21, of Dawson, to life imprisonment after he entered a guilty plea to two of three charges he faced, Terrell Superior Court Clerk Lousie Darley reported this week. Trotter had been charged with malice murder, felony murder and cruelty to children in the first degree, following the death of two-year-old James L. Lewis in May of this year. Trotter's trial ended after only two days of court testimony in Terrell Superior Court last week, after a negotiated plea was reached. Judge Lane accepted the plea presented by Pataula Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Ron Smith and defense attorney Weyman E. Cannington. Under the plea arrangement, Trotter pleaded guilty to felony murder and the cruelty charge, while the malice murder charge was nolle prossed. Judge Lane sentenced Trotter to life for the murder charge and 20 years for the child cruelty charge, with the two counts merged, Mrs. Darley said.
