City of Colquitt Happenings
by: Cory Thomas

This week I will discuss the water meter change-out program occurring throughout the City. During the last three months, the City of Colquitt's contractor has been performing a complete meter change-out of all water meters within the City. There are many meters that were discovered that were older than 15 years and many that have been under-performing for quite some time. Most meters have or will undergo a complete change-out while others that are newer will be adapted. The process should be complete within the next few months.

There is one new component to all of these meters that should prove very beneficial. The meters are equipped with an AMR system. That is an automated meter reading system. All water meters within the City will be equipped with a small computer chip and will be able to be read electronically. This will allow the staff to read the entire City water system in approximately four hours compared to the present six days. In addition, the water meter system will store a host of data at each location. We will be able to determine hour by hour the amount of water that passes through a meter in hopes of being able to isolate leaks for customers. Hopefully by the end of the year, the change-out should be complete and the new AMR system up and running.
