MCHS Lady Pirates fast-pitch On a very hot and humid Tuesday afternoon, August 14th, the Miller County Lady Pirates started their season at Spring Creek Park under the coaching ability of the dynamic duo of Head Coach Richard Prescott and Assistant Coach Renza Israel. Our girls were excited over their 10-0 win over Thomasville. Brooke Widner was on the mound for the Lady Pirates and went the distance. If you have not seen this young athlete's pitches, then you are in for a treat. Brooke had six strikeouts for this game.
Thomasville could not get a leg up on our Lady Pirate Defense. Defensive positions for our team were as follows: Brooke Widnerpitcher, Jessica Roberts- Catcher, Isabella Lawson- first, Laci Phillips-second, Mindi Merritt- shortstop, Erika Rigsby- third, Christina Tabb-left field, Jalessa Williams- centerfield, and Amber Kelley- right field. Other team members are Jenna Phillips, Hunter Cleveland, Macy Richardson, Brittany Miller, Beth Ann Phillips, Heather McDonald, and Olivia Andrews.
Then on the following Thursday, August 16, our girls hosted the Early County Lady Bobcats with game time, starting at 5;00 p.m. Heather McDonald went the distance on the mound for our Lady Pirates with three strikeouts. Laci Phillips was 3 for 5, Mindi Merritt was 2 for 5, Brooke Widner was 4 for 5, Erika Rigsby was 3 for 4, Christina Tabb was 2 for 4, Isabella Lawson was 3 for 4, Brittany Miller was 3 for 4, Jessica Roberts was 1 for 4, Olivia Andrews was 1 for 2, and Amber Kelly was 1 for 2. Again the Lady Pirates' defense stepped up and their offense came to life with their bats. Good job, Lady Pirates!
On Saturday, August 18, our Lady Pirates traveled up to Ashburn, Georgia, to play in their tourney. Our girls faced Dodge County at 10:30 that morning to start off the first game and fell short in an 11-0 defeat. Dodge Co. was a tough team.
The final game for our Lady Pirates started at 3:30 p.m. against Westover. I will have to hand it to these young athletes; it was truly unbearable with all the heat. I commend each one of these team players for being so dedicated to our athletic program and to the parents who also withstood the heat to be there to watch their daughters play their hearts out. The final score for this game was 7-1 with Westover's victory. Heather McDonald started on the mound, and Brooke Widner finished for our Lady Pirates. Our girls knew that these teams would be tough but before the season is over, I believe our girls can beat them. |
