City election soon
Qualifying time ends Friday, August 31

According to a legal notice in this edition, the registered voters of the City of Colquitt will have the opportunity to elect a new mayor and two new councilmen in the upcoming city election or re-elect those now serving.

Although the general election will be Tuesday, November 6, the qualifying time to enter these races will start and end next week. The opening day will be Monday, August 27, and will end Friday, August 31, at 4:30 p.m.

The offices that will be up for election will the City Council District #2, now held by Dennis Perkins; City Council District #3, now held by Algin R. Merritt; and Mayor of the city of Colquitt, now held by Jerry M. Chapman.

The qualification to offer for the city council post is that the candidate must reside in the district that he/she qualifies to run in. The office of mayor candidates must reside inside the city limits.

The qualifying fee for City Council is $54.00. The qualifying fee for mayor is $180.00.

To date, there have been no incumbent officers for City Council or mayor who have declared that they will offer for re-election. One councilman has unofficially stated that he will not offer for reelection due to his job.

Any person who is not registered to vote may do so by going by the City Hall before the close of business on Tuesday, October 9. Anyone wishing to offer for City Council or mayor's race may qualify with the city clerk between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday, August 27, 2007, until Friday, August 31, 2007, at the Colquitt City Hall.
