City of Colquitt Happenings

The Milford Street Sidewalk Project is presently on hold due to federal government additional requirements. We had bid the project and were well within budget to have the sidewalks completed. The agency that manages all of the federal transportation monies notified our attorney that we were going to have to fulfill a new requirement for the acquisition of the right-ofway for the sidewalks. To make a long story short, we are going to be delayed for approximately six to nine months in constructing the sidewalks in order to comply with the requirement that has been given. The City Council has authorized the necessary funds to continue with the project, and the additional work to secure the necessary right-of-way should begin soon. The sidewalk will run from the First Baptist Church to Ron-Cam Convenience Store.

We have also written a new TEA Grant that if funded will provide funds to continue the sidewalks on Milford Street extending to the new school facility. In addition, a walking track/ lane would run from the new school facility to the Crooked Oak Golf Club. We will be notified in the next few months if we receive this new grant.

The first annual City/ County Golf Tournament was held last week and was a huge success. There were approximately 100 golfers who participated. The golf course is in immaculate condition, and plans are being developed for a new entrance way.

In future weeks I will be covering details on the new wastewater treatment plant, the installation of automated read water meters, the construction of the new well facility and water tower and the different designations that the City of Colquitt has been awarded, and the Global Mural Conference coming to Colquitt in 2010.
