Memorial Day observed here
by MCL staff writer

Veterans stand as their service songs are played.
A most impressive Memorial Day observance was presented Monday, May 28, at 11:00 a.m. on the Colquitt square. Post #165 of the American Legion and Post #6046 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars were in charge of the program.

Commander of the American Legion, Amos George, opened the program promptly at 11:00 a.m. with a welcome to the veterans, their families and the supporters.

The empty chair for the Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action (POW/MIA) was placed by Deputy Commander Claude Newsome.

Chaplain Glenn Sheffield led in an opening prayer.

The National Anthem was played as Ferrell Davis raised the American Flag from half mast to full mast.

Commander George then introduced the feature speaker, Dr. Carl Marshall, pastor of Colquitt First Baptist Church.

Dr. Marshall started by easing the thoughts of some of his church members in the crowd. He stated that he has been known to preach with over 100 people present, and since he had gotten someone to take up collection he had better assure some of those present that he wouldn't keep the crowd too long.

Dr. Carl Marshall speaks on American values from our start.
Dr. Marshall didn't use a note or his Bible, but he gave a most inspiring talk on our country's history, where we have come from and where we can go or may be going if corrections and public apathy do not change. He spoke of how our first leaders asked from the One God for help in starting this nation with most of the odds and numbers against them. He told of how we could lose our freedom, if we haven't already with our changes is values and complacency.

It was a great talk, you should have been there if you weren't.

Ferrell and Sara Ann Keaton placed the traditional wreath in memory of those who did not return or have died since they returned. A time of meditation was given for those fallen heroes.

"Taps" was played by Ben Johnson. The crowd was again thanked by Commander George for attending, and a closing prayer was given by Chaplain Glenn Sheffield.
Sara Ann and Ferrell Keaton place the wreath above the veteran's monunment.
