The Miller County Retired Educators Association met at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, at Helen's Pirates Cove Restaurant with 17 members present. President Marian Walker asked Mr. Harry Davis to say grace before the meal. After enjoying the delicious lunch, the meeting was called to order by Mrs. Walker who led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
Beverly Richardson, program chairman, introduced Kayla Calhoun, STAR Student for the Miller County School System. Kayla commented on the activities she has been involved in and the skills she has learned while a student. She especially highlighted her involvement with the FFA program and the Relay for Life Team. She also shared with the group that she plans to attend UGA in the fall, majoring in either environmental management or political science prior to attending Law School and becoming an ag policy lawyer.
Kayla introduced Mr. Bill Spooner as her STAR Teacher selection. Mr. Spooner spoke about what an enjoyable experience it had been to have taught Kayla and stated that being named STAR Teacher was probably the biggest honor in his 23 years of teaching. After Kayla and Mr. Bill had a picture made with the group, they had to return to their duties at the high school.
The retired teachers appreciate their principal allowing the STAR Student and Teacher to come and share in their meeting.
Afterward, the business portion of the meeting was conducted, and the group was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
