U.S. Hwy. 27 dangerous in Colquitt

How many wrecks do we have to have to get a red lights at dangerous intersections?

There has to be several deaths was the answer.

Thank goodness, there were no deaths in this two vehicle accident, but one man was injured. There were seven occupants in the two vehicles, with three children inside one of the autos.

The accident occurred at the intersection of the very busy five-lane U.S. Highway 27 and Fourth Street in Colquitt, on February 23, at 5:49 p.m.

Amy Clyde Spooner, 51, of 400 E. Bush St., was traveling south on Fourth St. in her 1995 Ford Taurus and attempted to enter U.S. Highway 27.

B.J. Callaway, 41, of 113A Bremond St., was traveling west on U.S. Highway 27, alone, in his 1992 Lincoln Towncar, when it was struck broadside by Mrs. Spooner's auto. Both vehicles were severely damaged.

Two of the occupants in Spooner's vehicle were taken by ambulance to the Miller County Hospital. Randell Spooner, 54, sustained the most serious injuries. One of the other youth were also transported.

Of the seven occupants and drivers in the two vehicles, it could not be determined if four were wearing safety equipment when the crash occurred. It was confirmed that the three children were wearing safety equipment. Jamie Hemmick, 4, and Amber Hemmick 3, were wearing lap belts. Tyler Hemmick, 1, was in a child safety seat that was improp- erly used. The air bags were not deployed on either of the vehicles.

According to the incident report, the contributing factor that caused the accident was due to the Spooner vehicle failing to yield the right of way.

At anytime there are reported injuries in an accident, the Miller County Ambulance Service, the Colquitt/Miller Fire and Rescue Service and Colquitt Police and/or Miller County Sheriff officers are dispatched to the scene.

There were no citation issued at the time this report was made by Colquitt Police officer, Kenneth Kirkland.
