BOE policy stops students from being expelled

The Miller County Board of Education met in record time, 13 minutes, Monday night to take care of school business. It was the executive session to discuss personnel afterward that could last for awhile.

According to some teachers, a first grade student, 8 years old, struck a teacher at Miller County Elementary School.

Last year, the BOE made it a rule that a student in elementary school could not be expelled, but could be put into in-school suspension (ISS). There has been some discussion on this rule. The board also has a policy that there can be no tribunal on a student from grades K-3, so according to their policy now in effect, no further action can be taken with this student. A student can be expelled for bring a weapon on campus.

The BOE policies make this case mute since there can be no expelling if the student is five or 15 and in those grades k-3 since there can be no tribunal.

The student is in ISS class at school for 10 days, and some of the teachers and parents of other student are not happy that nothing can be done about a student striking a teacher at this grade level. The student will be back in regular class on Monday.
