Georgia DOT to restore locations to state maps

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Transportation will restore the names of 488 communities to its next printing of official state maps. The communities in question were removed from the current version of the map after motorists complained that the map was difficult to read because it contained too much printed material. Only communities that did not have any local form of government were deleted.

Three weeks ago, after the December meeting of the State Transportation Board, the decision was made to restore the communities to the 2007-2008 edition of the large print map to be released in late spring.

Governor Sonny Perdue, in a letter dated December 29 to State Transportation Board Chairman Mike Evans, also urged the Department to reconsider its previous decision to remove the names.
