Stafford hooks heaviest bass

Angler Hubert Stafford of Colquitt earned $7,867.00 Saturday, November 3, 2007, as the winner of the 309 boat field at the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Chevy Wild Card event. The event was held at Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Alabama.

Anglers who entered all five of their BFLDivision's events were invited to compete in the two-day event.

The Boater Division Snickers Big Bass award for day two went to Stafford with a four pound, 12 ounce bass that earned him an additional $1250.00.

Stafford was also the winner of the top finishers in the Ranger Boat and Yamaha Motor Corporation earning him an additional $1500.00, making a grand total of $10, 617.00.

His winning, two-day catch of 10 bass weighed 26 pounds, 14 ounces. In addition to the prize money, Stafford earned a ticket to the 2008 One Million Dollar Wal-Mart BFLAll American presented by Chevy on the Connecticut River in Hartford, Connecticut, May 29-31. With top boater award of $140,000, the All American is one of the most prestigious tournaments in bass fishing.

The winning boater at the All American will also advance to the $2 million 2008 Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Murray in Columbia, S.C. August 14-17, 2008. The pros will fish for a top award of $1 milion - the sports biggest payday.

Stafford had 12 pounds, 9 ounces Friday and won the event after bringing 14 pounds, five ounces to the scales Saturday.

Stafford caught his winning bass by throwing soft plastics near Decatur Flats around shell beds and hydrilla.

Stafford is the owner and operator of PicNPay supermarket in Colquitt.
