Coach Melton honored by Randolph Southern

Coach Robert Melton with the plaque he was presented by his home school recently Coach Robert Melton with the plaque he was presented by his home school recently It has always been an honor to have outstanding athletes here in little old Colquitt, Georgia, and recently, Miller County High School Basketball Head Coach Robert Melton was honored at his hometown school, Randolph Southern in Shellman for all of his athletic ability he gave during his high school years. His jersey #44 was officially retired during the ceremony.

Coach Melton played basketball from 1970 to 1974, and here is an overview of what the coach accomplished during those four years. He scored a total of 2,524 points (averaging 19 points per game) and had 1,487 rebounds (averaging 11 rebounds per game). During his senior year, in a single game, Robert scored a total of 68 points; at half-time of the game he already had 53 points. WOW! Bet that was something to see!

Coach Melton was All- Region for four years, All State for three years, and during his junior year (1973) he was Region Most Valuable Player, and he was Albany Herald Player of Year 1974. His Randolph Southern High School team won state in 1971, and was state runner up in 1972 and 1973.

A host of family and friends as well as alumni were on hand to honor and watch Robert's basketball jersey # 44 be retired. He received a plaque for his outstanding achievement in the game of basketball.

Family members who attended were his lovely wife, Marianne Merritt Melton; his daughter, Lauren Melton and grandson Thomas; his mother, Mrs. Mary Melton; his brother, John Melton; his five sisters, Patsy Ammons, Sue and Charles Bryant and son-Rick Downer, Fannie and Berry Barfield and son, Jim, Paul, Jackie and Hal Wiggins, Janice Dale, Mrs. Ruth Merritt, Jami and Jeremiah Horne, and George and Melanie Williams.

"This is quite an honor, and I am proud to have most of my family here to share in this event" stated Coach Robert Melton. Coach Melton has been the Miller County High School Lady Pirates' basketball coach for eight years. It was in 2001, that Coach Melton caught the eye of a former Lady Pirate and former Auburn Lady Tiger- Coach Marianne Merritt.

Marianne also has had many honors and recognitions for her outstanding playing ability in the game of the round ball. Both Coach Robert and Coach Marianne are very dedicated to their work and career. Our school system is proud to have both of the athletes/coaches as part of our school system.
