In the past few weeks, I have attended special, call and training meetings of the Miller County Board of Education. No one was there except the board members, all of them, the superintendent a trainer, mediator and attorney to try to teach/advise our board members how to act and get along.

First, all these people are all personal friends of mine.

Fall is always a fun time in my hometown. The air is crisp, the leaves are lovely, and at any moment you’re liable to hear a group of high school students yelling, “Go, Cougars!”

They’re not urging wild animals to escape from the nearest zoo. They’re pulling for the Newnan High School Cougars. The kids call it Cuga Time. They love it. So do I.

I was a small mutt roaming the streets of Iraq when Luke found me. Dirty, scrawny and bloody. I remember his boot nudging me to see if I were alive. I braced myself for a kick, but it never came.

Luke picked me up and looked me all over to see where the blood was coming from. I wanted to tell him that I had walked through a pool of blood that morning, but I just whimpered.

We have a new dog ordinance. Actually, it’s an animal control ordinance, but it will mostly affect dangerous or potentially dangerous dogs. It took a personal attack at my home for me to find out that our previous ordinance was woefully inadequate.
