Grace M. Henderson, 82, of Colquitt, died May 22, 2005 at Miller County Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist with the Rev. Archie Crows officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Henderson was born December 3, 1922 and was a retired social service worker for DFCS.

Survivors include five children, Vivian Butler of Newark, NJ, Addie Ruth Miller of Newark, NJ, Alice M. Young of Rawley’s Island, SC, Gracie Yvonne Henderson of Iraq, and William Henderson of Dublin; two sisters, Annie L. Hawkins of Albany and Gladys Jones of Colqitt; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Hazel Wilson Battles, 90, of Bainbridge, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at her residence in Bainbridge.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Bainbridge with Dr. Danny Shepard officiating. Interment followed at Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Pallbearers were Luke Spooner III, Wesley Phinney III, Joe Frank Battles, Corbett Phinney, Brian Harrell, and Brandan Harrell.

Mrs. Battles was born May 8, 1915 in Ellenton, FL, the daughter of Williams Emery “Chief” Wilson and Catherine Naomi Grafton Wilson. She graduated from Attapulgus High School in 1931 and attended Huntington College. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Mayflower Society, served as a Regent with the D.A.R., and was the author of The Wilson’s of Cherryfield Maine.

Survivors include one son, Georgie Franklin Battles III, and wife, Charlotte, of Bainbridge; three daughters, Catherine Ann Battles Nelson and husband, Ken, of Bainbridge, Susan Deborah Battles Phinney and husband, Sandy, of Canton, Margaret Wilson Battles Harrell and husband, Larry, of Donalsonville; 12 grandchildren, Pam Nelson Collins of Bainbridge, Susan Nelson of Bainbridge, Kemala Battles Tribe of Covington, Joe Frank Battles of Bainbridge, Wes Phinney III of Dalton, Corbett Phinney of Dallas, Jennifer Nunnery of Donalsonville, Susanne Clearman of Marietta, Mimi Woodruff of Donalsonville, Luke Spooner III of Marietta, Brian Harrell of Donalsonville, and Brandan Harrell of Plains; and 24 great-grandchildren.

F. Emory Richardson Jr., 91, of Colquitt, died May 25, 2005 at Phoebe Putney Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 27, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Sheffield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Talmadge Worsley and the Rev. James Barnes officiating. Interment followed in Gordon Cemetery.

Pallbeares were Kent Richardson, Thad Richardson, Stephen Richardson, Bobby Richardson, Jr., and Tony Richardson.

Mr. Richardson was born April 1, 1914 in Early County. He retired after 35 years of driving a school bus for the Miller County school system. He was the owner of Griggs Grocery in Colquitt for nine years, sold Federal Crop Insurance and was a Federal Crop Insurance claim adjuster, and measured land for the USDA for many years. In 1990 he retired and bought the Carl Phillips house and moved to town. He was deacon at White Plains Free Will Baptist Church until 1953 and then moved to New Salem Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a deacon until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Richardson of Colquitt; four sons, Bobby and daughter-in-law, Beverly Richardson, Gordon and daughter-in-law Patsy Richardson of Colquitt, Tommy and daughter-in-law Patricia Richardson of Panama City Beach, FL, and Philip Richardson of Bainbridge; one daughter-in-law, Allie Mae Richardson of Colquitt; one sister, Winnie Lou Layton of Colquitt; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, David Richardson.

Lois Floyd Cross, 94, formerly of Cedar Springs, died May 23, 2005.

A memorial service was held at Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville, on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with interment and graveside service at Cedar Springs.

Mrs. Cross was born in Donalsonville on September 26, 1910 to the late Alice Ragan and Joshua Floyd. She was one of nine children and grew up in the Cedar Springs Community.

Survivors include one child, Richard M. Cross of King, NC; three grandchildren and their spouses, Betsy Cross Griswold of Atlanta, Michael S. Cross of King, NC, and Mary Alice Cross Fleming of Minneapolis, MN; three great grandchildren, Michael Cross, Elizabeth Cross, and Anna Fleming.

John Henry “Jay” Godby, Jr., 78, of Brinson, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, AL.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 27, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at New Enterprise Freewill Baptist Church in Iron City, with Rev. Luther Hastey officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Godby was born in Seminole County on August 21, 1926 to the late John Henry, Sr. and Isabella Eley Godby. Mr. Godby had lived in this area all his life, he was a prominent farmer and of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Tomlin Godby; one daughter, Gloria Faye Sensor of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; and three sons, Johnny Gary Godby and Gerald Lee Godby and his wife Amanda, all of Brinson, Michael Godby and his wife, Holly, of Donalsonville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bryant Arthur Phillips, 85, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Colquitt, passed away May 22, 2005 in Jacksonville, FL. The visitation will be Saturday, May 28, 2005 from 6 til 8:00 P.M. at Colquitt Funeral Home. The funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 29, 2005 at Sheffield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mike Close officiating. Phil Phillips, Carlos Loyola, Scott Clover, Andy Close, Dan Budd, and Frank Japour will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Colquitt City Cemetery.
Mr. Phillips was born June 16, 1919 in Miller Co. He was a farmer and of the Baptist Faith. He is survived by one son, Jimmie Phillips and daughter-in-law Jane of St. Matthews, SC; two sisters, Laverne Japour of Jacksonville, FL and Hazel Clover of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Phil Phillips & granddaughter-in-law KrisAnn of Gurnee, IL, Heather Phillips of Chicago, IL, Mike Close & granddaughter -in-law Teresa of Locust Grove, GA, and Andy Close & granddaughter-in-law Tracy of Newnan, GA; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

October 14, 1940 - May 23, 2005

Mr. Larry Eric Grimsley, 64, of Colquitt, GA passed away May 23, 2005 at his residence. The visitation will be Tuesday, May 24, 2005 from 7 til 9:00 P.M. at Colquitt Funeral Home. The funeral will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at Colquitt United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Romigh and Rev. Walter Daniels officiating. Terry Bevis, Frank Heard Jr., Martine Phillips, Felix Tabb Jr., Walter Hayes, and Joy Tully will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Primitive Union Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Colquitt United Methodist Church or the James W. Merritt Memorial Library.
Mr. Grimsley was born October 14, 1940 in Seminole Co., GA. He was retired after 25 years of ownership of Quality Applicators in Colquitt. He was also a member of the Walter C. Dancer Lodge # 115, the Albany Hasan Shrine Temple, and of the Colquitt United Methodist Church. Mr. Grimsley was an avid fisherman and a lifelong University of Georgia football fan.
Mr. Grimsley is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Susan Bush Grimsley of Colquitt, GA; two daughters & sons-in-law, Kim Grimsley Widner & Oliver ofColquitt and Lari Grimsley Hagan & Johnny of Dixie, GA; mother, Tassie Grimsley of Colquitt; two brothers, Ray Grimsley and Jerry Grimsley, both of Colquitt; one sister, Carolyn Amundsen of Albany; and three grandsons, Colby Widner, Zach Hagan, & Hunter Hagan. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Eric Grimsley.
