JERRY CANNON JOINER
Mr. Jerry Cannon Joiner, 66, of Colquitt, GA passed away May 16, 2006 at his residence. The visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6 til 8:00 P.M. at Colquitt Funeral Home. The funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 17, 2006 at Colquitt United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Romigh & Rev. Tim Mock officiating. Active pallbearers will be Walter Hays, Felix Tabb, Terry Toole, Glenn Sheffield, Ben Johnson, Ronnie Rentz, Spud Bush and Seth Mock. Gerald Grow Post # 165 American Legion and the employees of C & S Bank will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow at Milford Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Joiner was born June 19, 1939 in Albany, Ga to Howard Joiner, an accountant, and Sara Cannon Joiner, a published writer and retired school teacher. When he was three years old his family moved from Albany to Cape Fear Valley in Eastern North Carolina where he grew up and attended school in Warsaw and Fayetteville. After high school Mr Joiner joined the United States Air Force, serving in Sacramento, CA, Ashiya, Japan, and briefly in Korea. He achieved the honor of Senior Airman and was honorably discharged in 1961. He then returned to Albany and began his career at C & S Bank of Albany. He worked in Albany, Valdosta, and Atlanta. He retired in 1997 after serving 38 years. At retirement he was Senior Vice President. Mr. Joiner and his wife Brenda spent the last six months of his banking career as volunteers for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Mr. Joiner graduated with honors from Albany Junior College (Darton), attended Valdosta State, GA State University, and received a graduate degree in banking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Mr. Joiner achieved many accomplishments while in Banking, among them were President of the BAI in Albany and Atlanta. He served the GA Bankers Association in many capacities covering bank operations and personnel. He represented the entire 6th Federal Reserve District as an advisor for bank operations. He co-authored “Principles of Banking” the primary text for entry level bankers. He was named Teacher of The Year for the AIB in Atlanta. Additionally Mr. Joiner had served in numerous civic, social, and religious capacities, They included member of the Albany and Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma Club, Lions Club, founding director of YMCA in Valdosta, YMCA of Albany, Director of Liberty House in Albany, president and director of Inlet Beach Water Co. in Walton County, FL., president and director of Historic Inlet Beach Association, Charter member of Double Gate Country Club in Albany, and the Gerald Grow Post # 165 American Legion in Colquitt. A life long Methodist, Mr Joiner has served in virtually every lay position in the churches in Albany, Valdosta, Atlanta, and Colquitt. He was on the Finance and Lay Leadership committee at Colquitt United Methodist Church at the time of his death. Mr Joiner was also a Gideon. Mr. Joiner is survived by hiw wife of 44 years, Brenda Peace Joiner of Colquitt; two daughters, Day Joiner Henderson & son-in-law Britt of Tallahassee, Fl and Christy Joiner of Inlet Beach , FL & Colquitt; granddaughter, Hollan Henderson of Tallahassee, Fl; three brothers, Howard Joiner & sister-in-law Mary of Colquitt, Frank Joiner & sister-in-law Carolyn, and Lee Joiner both of Americus; mother-in-law, Lois Peace of Colquitt; one sister-in-law, Janis Peace Ward with brother-in-law Bruce of Arlington; and one brother-in-law, Steve Peace of Blakely.
